tortoisegirl: (Beat- Do not want)
I'll get back to the 30 day meme soon, but the next few prompts are long and complicated and I'm not up to it right now.

I went to a presentation on careers in the publishing industry yesterday and I think...I think I need to get a Facebook. They kept mentioning promoting via social networks it might actually hurt me to say I don't know how FB works. The office I work for now has one but my coworker handles it. Whenever I have to log on to upload something or friend someone (like, twice so far) it takes me forever to navigate and get it done. I don't want to deal with people finding me though...maybe a fake name just to get used to it? I don't know, would it look better to an employer to not have a FB at all, or to have one they can find that's free of all the crap that gets people fired? I really don't want to deal with pretending to be interested in people I kinda remember from high school.

But other than that revelation the presentation was very useful, and hey, maybe that line about "something in publishing" I've been feeding to people who ask about my job plans could actually happen. I need to work on my resume. And read up on the book industry.

Still need to find something to wear to my dad's wedding reception tomorrow. I have my standard dress that I've worn to a few dressy things already, but it shows off the tattoo on my back. And my grandparents don't know that I have any tattoos. They wouldn't throw a fit or anything, but it's not a conversation I'm sure I want to have. Maybe I can find a shawl to keep around my shoulders since it'll be cold anyway. My sister's going to be late to the reception b/c of a band competition that day and for some reason I'm stressing over it. I'm kinda scared she'll use it as an excuse to skip it all together, and I don't wanna think about what that'll do to my dad. I also hope I can find my camera before tomorrow- it's been missing for about a month.

I so wish I could do NaNoWriMo this year. I've gotten a laptop since I last tried which I think would help my word count (made it to about 25k words last time). Too much school work though. Maybe I'll try to write my papers in the style of NaNo; write 3000 words of nonsense to fill the pages, edit it later.

See, something interrupts my frequent LJ posting and suddenly I'm completely out of the habit. Anyway.

30 Day Meme
Day 22 → A website

Orisinal, a site full of adorable little flash games. Kinda my go-to for de-stressing (when I don't want a shooting-things kind of game). I've spent cumulative hours playing the one with the bunny and the bells.

Life in school has slowed down to a normal pace, which still means lots of reading but at least I'm not tied to a computer typing up papers. Still house-sitting for my dad, which continues to be nice and quiet. There are so many stray cats in this neighborhood. One of them let me pet them this morning, though they usually scatter when I walk by. Still haven't stopped by the cafe down the street, but I hope to do that after work today. Not much going on this weekend, for the next two weekends I have plans, delicious plans! I need to find time to go to Linvilla Orchards and buy up all the apple-related things I can manage.

Was introduced to typography video on [livejournal.com profile] ontdcreepy. It's essentially just a new way of quoting your favorite movie lines at the world, but who am I to argue against that. They're cool. And there's a ton of them!

This one from Pulp Fiction is one my favs so far.

A few more )

Been watching these to try to keep myself from checking my email every fives minutes. I'm supposed to hear back from that program that might send me to Japan this week. Nervous about whether I got in or not :(
tortoisegirl: (You tell 'em Walter)
-Gah, I've got half a dozen papers to work on and I keep getting sucked into the timesink that is [livejournal.com profile] ontdcreepy, then losing sleep stressing over papers and thinking shadow monsters are going to eat me. I'm pretty masochistic when it comes to devouring scary stories that I know are going to fuck with my brain. And with procrastinating on papers, thought that's nothing new.

-I'm in the process of doing my damnedest to get a passport asap, which is proving difficult because of time and money. My dad sent me info on this program with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that's sending Japanese American students to Japan this summer, and if I apply I think I have a good chance of being accepted (my sob story about not getting to live in Tokyo last year might do me some good). But I need the passport first, and the application deadline approaches. Why must they be so expensive :(

-I made a post about my fail!tattoo in [livejournal.com profile] bodymods. Responses were uniformly D: but sympathetic. A bunch of people suggested an ink allergy as the cause of the problems, which I hadn't considered before and didn't think to ask about at the shop. I have brown ink (and other colors) on my other tattoo that healed fine, but it might have been a different brand of ink. It's something I'll have to ask about when I go back in a few weeks. If it means just picking a different shade of brown (which would hopefully have a different chemical makeup) to avoid this again that would be great.

BTW, what's left of the tattoo has healed up as little rings of brown on my arm. They look like tentacle marks. Which is not what I wanted, but at least I can tell anyone who asks that I was attacked by a tiny octopus.

Meme tiems

A meme, in which I talk about myself. Questions courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] sandoz_iscariot.

1. What's the origin of your username?

It's one I came up with when I was 14 or 15, a few years before I got a Livejournal, and used here and on the internet. I think my criteria when picking it was just animal name + girl and tortoisegirl happened to be available. Creative, I know. I don't actually have any connection to or particular love for tortoises.

2. Your favorite aspect of fandom?

Talking to people. This is the first time I've really gotten involved in a fandom and finding so many great people I can talk to about something I love so much was a bit unexpected, but something I really enjoy.

3. You look away from the computer. What's the first thing you see?

Ahaha, my gold teacup I dug out of a box last week. I got it at a thrift store a few years ago and it makes me feel like such a pimp when I use it.

Photobucket

4. Desert island album?

Hmm, I've never considered this before. I guess it's my dirty little secret that I don't listen to music a lot. It's pretty much only when I'm at my computer and not doing anything that involves too much concentration. I'd probably be fine without any music on that deserted island, but off the top of my head these are songs that I keep coming back to and wouldn't mind having around.

XTC- We're All Light
They Might Be Giants- Birdhouse in Your Soul
Audioslave- Doesn't Remind Me
Donovon- Happiness Runs (yeah it's a kid's song, shut up :P)
Pearl Jam- Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
The Beatles (and/or the Pearl Jam cover)- You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
The New Pornographers- Adventures in Solitude
Gorillaz- Feel Good Inc.
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Dosed
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Pretty Little Ditty
The Roots- The Seed
Flogging Molly- Death Valley Queen
Bad Religion- Stranger Than Fiction

And if I were to fill it out more I'd comb through my early 90's music for more material.

5. What's the meaning of life?

Of human life on Earth as a whole, I don't think there is any meaning to our existence. On an individual basis, I don't know if there's any meaning there either. But since I do exist I guess putting meaning to my life would mean living as happily as possible while not impeding anyone else's happiness and helping people when I can. God I suck at philosophy.

Dealing with PayPal is like pulling teeth. They made make me jump through flaming barbed wire hoops just to just to get a password reminder, then in the end I couldn't recover my password because they want me to enter credit card info as a security measure, but the one they have on file is the old expired one that's been trashed for months. So with that account apparently inaccessible I created a new one, which I don't like doing because I don't like the dangling threads of abandoned accounts, and now I have to wait two days for them to verify my bank account. And I just wanted to buy stuff of Ebay. >:(

I bought Dragon Age: Origins with my not-lost-forever giftcards, and it's great so far, but three hours into the game I'm stuck in a spot where I keep dying. It's getting frustrating, being killed a dozen times in a row.

BUT I HAVE A PAID ACCOUNT NOW YAY so I will soothe my frustration by going off to find more icons for my lovely new icon space.
